 PINE TREE BOOKS

This was the first time I had seen a brown bear catching a pink salmon swimming upstream. I was aboard my friend's small fishing boat, being thrown about by strong winds and the raging tide just off Rusha Bay in the Shiretoko Peninsula, as I tried desperately to steady my camera.

The bear on the other side of the bay didn't notice us, as it was too engrossed in the fish before it. My friend said to me, "Don't take such a clichéd photo!" But, overwhelmed by the scene unfolding before my eyes, I couldn't care less if it was a cliché.

Although it didn't seem as though I could reach the other side, I feel like this distance has taught me the place in which I stand.
